The English squad will embark on their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they attain the expected entry for a tournament hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an English men’s match since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to welcome the England side for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Launch and Rally
The championship was unveiled at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were confronted as they approached the site by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be expelled from global football because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were held up with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The first match of the European Championship will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve Wales if they qualify.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract households and help engage a broader range of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Irish team are scheduled to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches held at every host’s main arena.
The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Leadership Comment
“It will be a competition for the supporters and a celebration of everything we value about the game – its passion and ability to unite individuals.”
More than three million admissions, a record for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be offered to attendees.
