The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the footage.

Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the site from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.

Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
