Mount Semeru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Evacuations

The nation's Mount Semeru, the tallest summit on the island of Java, has erupted, covering several villages with falling ash, prompting evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the highest level.

The volcano in the province of East Java released searing clouds of fiery ash and a combination of rock, lava and gas that moved up to 4 miles down its slopes multiple times from midday to dusk, while a dense plume of hot clouds rose 2km into the air, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced officials to raise the volcano’s alert level twice, from the third-highest level to the highest, the authority said. No casualties have been reported.

More than 300 residents in the three villages most endangered in the area of Lumajang were evacuated to official safe havens, according to a spokesperson for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He stated that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on the afternoon of Wednesday led officials to expand the danger zone to 8km from the summit. Residents were urged to keep away from an area along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the path of the molten rock stream, as searing gas moved down the volcano's sides.

Footage on social media showed a thick plume of volcanic dust moving through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a overpass. Residents, some with faces covered with ash and water, escaped to temporary shelters or departed for other safe areas.

Local media reported that emergency teams were facing challenges to rescue about 178 individuals stranded on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group included 137 hikers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an official with the protected area.

“They remain secure at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” an official stated in a video statement. He said the station was situated 4.5km from the summit on the north side of the volcano, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was seen traveling to the south-southeast. Bad weather and rain forced the team to remain overnight there, he explained.

The volcano, also known as Mahameru, has burst many occasions in the last two centuries. However, as is the case with numerous of the 129 live volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of people continue to live on its productive highlands.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in December 2021, when 51 people were lost their lives and hundreds more were injured and villages were buried in thick mud. The event led to the relocation of over ten thousand people from their houses.

Indonesia, an island chain of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific seismic belt, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to seismic events and volcanic activity.
