New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
