The state AG has introduced a fresh digital platform asking locals to share photos and videos of immigration raids around New York. This step comes just a day after a significant enforcement action rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking mass demonstrations.
US Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action
A lawmaker disclosed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were arrested and kept for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Every New Yorker deserves to reside free from terror," the AG stated in a release.
"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to provide that material with us. We are pledged to examining these submissions and determining any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The portal offers spaces to submit images and video footage of the operation, as well as a field to note location information. Before submitting, submitters must check a box that confirms that "authorities might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or public report."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say involved dozens of federal agents, took place in a well-known district of Manhattan where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are sold daily widely – typically to sightseers.
Videos of the operation depict numerous masked and armed federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of locals followed the officers through the streets. An armored truck was observed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
During a news conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democratic representative, stated that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be taken for no reason." He said the persons were released on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," he said. "This is a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a justification to incite violence for this administration to utilize the armed forces to prevent conflict that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the federal action escalated – every NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, along with the state leader.
"Once again, the Trump administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, instead of protection. It must stop," a contender wrote.
New York City immigrant rights groups spoke out as well.
"Federal officers descended on Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This raid had no connection to citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and neighborhoods," stated the head of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has claimed it refrains from take into custody US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the start of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide this year.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Protests opposing immigration enforcement are commonplace including allegations of aggression and cruel conditions.
Latest, a letter submitted by advocacy organizations alleged healthcare failures of pregnant women in government custody.
