Past Statements on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right former soldier showed scant sympathy for the country's prison population.
“What’s the need to offer these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

He cannot carry on being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long applauding the tough treatment of convicts, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Only now has the far-right – which has always asserted that human rights should not be for offenders – chosen to tour a jail to discover what circumstances are truly like,” he said.
