The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address

During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

• A cap on rents for about 1 million households

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
