The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Some gathered at the site of the Nova Music Festival, where in excess of 370 people were killed and many more abducted to Gaza as captives
People have assembled across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have still not produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Discussions
A permanent ceasefire
The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
The pullout of troops from Gaza
Plans for assistance provision
Future administration of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place seems like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester a participant explained: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the captives to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that around 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, area and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"My family are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my little child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had received the remains of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis said two more victims had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli forces while looking for help to the south, medical staff said.
