Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
