Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.
Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.
