Three Lions Coach Explains The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach featured at a lower division club. Now, he's dedicated supporting Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His path from the pitch to the sidelines began through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Commencing with his first major job, he developed a standing for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, plus he took on international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies involve mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he declares. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured qualification with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that our playing approach should represent all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the adaptability, the physicality, the honesty. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information now. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are really trying to speed up play through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for development is all-consuming. During his education for his pro license, he was worried over the speaking requirement, since his group featured big names including former players. For self-improvement, he entered difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He completed the course with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he recruited the coach to his team at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he recruited Barry away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
